200 Days to go!

200 Days to go!

Today marks 200 days until the next Disabled Access Day. Behind the scenes we’ve been busy encouraging venues to sign up, updating all our materials and making grand plans – we will tell you when we know more (so make sure you’re signed up to our newsletter)! Over 250 individual venues took part this year and we have plans for hundreds more to get involved in 2016 - so there is a lot of work to be done before the big day!

If you own, manage or work at a venue then we would love you to join us on 12th March 2016! There are so many great reasons why you should be a part of Disabled Access Day 2016, but here are our top five reasons for getting involved:

1. Promote your accessibility

We know there a tonnes of great accessible venues out there, we also know that many of them don’t shout about it! Disabled Access Day is the day to start (or continue) promoting all the accessible facilities at your venue. Whether it’s a Changing Places toilet, audio tours, complimentary carer tickets, all of the above or much more – the 12th March is the perfect opportunity for you to join us and show that your venue is accessible.

2. Engage more people

Whether you’re a museum, a shop, a hotel or a restaurant getting more people through your doors is probably a top priority! Nearly 1 in 5 people in the UK is disabled, when you take into account friends and family that is large proportion of the UK population. Disabled Access Day is the perfect day to encourage more people to visit and engage with your venue.

3. Build a profile in the local community

Last year we received some great press coverage both locally and nationally – including coverage on the BBC, Sky News and STV. We also saw some great partnership working between venues and local charities and other organisations. So getting involved in Disabled Access Day is a great opportunity for you to build your profile in your local community and make more people aware of the accessible facilities available at your venue.

4. Show off friendly and welcoming staff

We’re often told that people’s best experiences come from great staff and a warm welcome. We received excellent feedback from staff that were involved last year. So give your staff the chance to shine on Disabled Access Day 2016 – they’ll get more out of it than you might think.

5. Don’t be the odd one out!

Disabled Access Day 2015 was a great success - we received fantastic feedback last year from venue managers, venue staff, disabled people and their friends and family who took part on the day – and with our sights set on hundreds more venues taking part this year it can only get bigger and better! So don’t be the odd one out on 12th March 2016 – sign up now!

Already got an event planned on 12th March 2016? Great! That’s even more of a reason for you to get involved. You may want to consider adding something to your day like a BSL guided tour, a free coffee with a meal or 2 for 1 tickets – but we also understand there’s no such thing as a free lunch, so if you’re unable to offer something extra a good old fashioned friendly welcome is also great!
